The Supreme Court has nullified the local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, citing gross violations of the Electoral Act.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that the election failed to meet the legal requirements, rendering it invalid.
In another development, the Supreme Court also ruled that the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, should resume legislative duties without obstruction. The court affirmed that Amaewhule and 25 other lawmakers remain the legitimate members of the state assembly.
Meanwhile, political tensions in the state continue to escalate as former Governor Nyesom Wike criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for presenting the 2024 budget to only three assembly members. Wike described the act as an impeachable offense, further deepening the rift between the two political factions.
The ruling is expected to reshape the political landscape in Rivers State, with stakeholders closely monitoring the unfolding events.
