Gunfire Erupts Between Security Operatives in Anambra, Mistaken for IPOB Attack

A case of mistaken identity led to a gunfight between security operatives in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday, raising alarm among residents. The clash occurred near Izuchukwu Junction on the Nnobi/Nnewi road, as one security agency mistook police officers for gunmen allegedly associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Details of the Incident

Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, clarified that the altercation stemmed from miscommunication among the security forces.

  • The incident, which happened around 7 PM, was initially misconstrued as an attempt to disrupt preparations for the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in London on July 27.
  • Ikenga debunked these claims, confirming that the clash occurred when a team of operatives trailed a suspect to a checkpoint, leading to the gun duel.

Casualties and Damages

  • Stray bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan carrying security personnel, igniting a fire that destroyed the vehicle.
  • Two innocent passersby sustained injuries and were immediately hospitalized.
  • There were no reports of fatalities among the security operatives involved.

Security Measures

Joint security forces have been deployed in Nnewi to maintain peace and ensure the smooth conduct of the burial ceremony. The late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is scheduled to be interred on November 22 at his hometown in Otolo, Nnewi.

Call for Calm

Ikenga urged residents to remain calm while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the confusion and prevent similar occurrences. He assured the public that the situation is under control and that adequate measures are in place to maintain order throughout the burial activities.

This incident highlights the critical need for improved communication and coordination among security agencies to avoid such unfortunate confrontations.
