Finally speaking out, Shehu Gabam, the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), discussed his recent meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s allies.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, rumours of a potential political merger were raised by the private meeting, which was held at the SDP national secretariat.

Gabam claims that rather than focusing on a political party, the meeting was about discussions for a better Nigeria. “Neither El-Rufai nor any of them have made any formal announcement regarding their intention to join SDP,” Gabam explained. “We are seeking individuals who share our vision for the nation’s future so that we can collaborate and raise Nigerians’ standard of living.”

Additionally, Gabam disclosed that he has been meeting with dignitaries from various political parties to discuss ways to stabilise the nation and provide the government with useful advice. “Every Nigerian is impacted when the government experiences a crisis,” Gabam underlined. Therefore, ensuring that we are not in a crisis is one of our duties.

The chairman of the SDP promised that the discussion is still going on and that they will reach a decision and have a formal press conference when the time comes. “Once we reach a consensus on our joint plan, we will reveal it to all Nigerians,” Gabam pledged.

Gabam’s remarks follow Segun Showunmi, a PDP chieftain and Atiku Abubakar ally, characterizing the meeting as “strategic.” The purpose of the meeting, according to Showunmi, was to discuss “The state of opposition democratic engagement in Nigeria” and develop a more powerful opposition for Nigeria in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
