Etche, Rivers State — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has thrown his support behind Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amidst the ongoing political crisis between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an exhibition at Nihi Community in Etche Local Government Area on Sunday, Jonathan encouraged Fubara to remain steadfast despite the challenges facing his administration.
“I know you are passing through challenges, and at occasions like these, I try to keep quiet. I don’t like to say certain things,” Jonathan said, alluding to the political tensions in the state.
Emerging as a Political ‘General’
Jonathan likened Fubara’s struggles to the trials of a soldier in training, suggesting that the ongoing crisis would strengthen the governor’s leadership capabilities.
“This is your first time holding a top political office, and you will face many challenges,” Jonathan noted. “But remember, no one becomes a General without fighting wars. The challenges you’re encountering now are shaping you to be a General in politics.”
Call for Unity and Peace
The former president called on the people of Rivers State to rally behind Fubara to ensure peace and development. Highlighting the strategic importance of Rivers as the heart of the Niger Delta, Jonathan warned that prolonged instability could have far-reaching consequences for the region and the nation.
“We desire a peaceful Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta,” Jonathan emphasized. “Any serious disturbance in Rivers State will lead to a crisis in the Niger Delta, which will harm our national economy.”
He also appealed for political tolerance, urging stakeholders to prioritize governance over conflict.
“In political office, there are defined tenures. We don’t need to fight over political positions. Let those in office do their work, and when their time is up, other things will unfold,” he said.
Governor Fubara’s Response
Governor Fubara expressed gratitude for Jonathan’s support and for the chieftaincy title conferred on him during the event. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering essential projects and social services to uplift the people of Rivers State.
The political crisis between Fubara and Wike, which has persisted since last year, escalated with an impeachment attempt against the governor. This turmoil has led to a factionalized House of Assembly and instances of violence in the state.
Fubara’s supporters see Jonathan’s endorsement as a significant boost for the embattled governor, who has faced immense pressure in navigating the political minefield left by his predecessor.
