Femi Adesina, a former spokesperson for the presidency, has revealed the details of a conversation between ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and a delegation led by Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, a First Republic Minister of Aviation, regarding the imprisonment of Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu.
The delegation, operating under the banner of Highly-Respected Igbo Greats and led by Amaechi, visited Buhari towards the end of his tenure, pressing for Kanu’s release and expressing concerns about the potential impact on Southeast security.
In response, Adesina shared that Buhari conveyed the difficulty of the request and its serious implications during the meeting. Quoting Buhari, Adesina stated, “You have made an extremely difficult demand on me as the leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious.”
Buhari emphasized his commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating, “In the last six years, nobody will say I have confronted the judiciary. We are developing a country, and we have to go through the pains.”
Acknowledging the weight of the delegation’s request, Buhari assured them, “The demand you have made is heavy, but I will consider it. I am glad to know you closely at this time.”
Additionally, Buhari extended his condolences to Amaechi on the loss of his wife, stating, “Please, accept my sympathy once again on the loss of your wife. May her soul rest in peace.”
