Rivers APC Chairman Okocha to Governor Fubara: Resign or Face Impeachment
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has issued a strong ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to either resign or face impeachment amid the deepening political crisis in the state.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha dismissed Fubara’s invitation to the pro-Wike lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a “Greek gift,” questioning the governor’s sincerity in resolving the standoff.
Fubara had invited the lawmakers, who are loyal to his estranged political ally, Nyesom Wike, to a meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt, following the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum given by the Assembly for him to present the 2025 budget.
Earlier, the lawmakers had also demanded the governor dismiss commissioners and board members who were not screened by the House, while summoning the chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
In a letter dated March 9 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the governor expressed readiness to engage with the legislators, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the crisis. The meeting’s agenda included providing a suitable venue for Assembly sittings, payment of outstanding allowances, budget presentation, and other governance-related matters.
However, despite expectations that the Supreme Court’s verdict would bring an end to the crisis, both factions have continued to interpret the ruling in their favor, further escalating tensions.
Reacting to the developments, Okocha accused Fubara of disregarding the rule of law and insisted that his only options were to step down or be removed from office.
“The invitation to the lawmakers is nothing but a Greek gift. The Supreme Court judgment is final, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The only option available to the governor now is to resign or be impeached,” Okocha declared.
As the political deadlock intensifies, all eyes remain on the unfolding drama in Rivers State, with the battle for control showing no signs of abating.
