House of Reps Opposes Telecom Tariff Hike, Demands Improved Service
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to suspend the proposed increase in telecommunication tariffs until service providers enhance network quality.
Hon. Obuku Oforgi, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, moved a motion of urgent public importance, describing the planned tariff hike as insensitive. He argued that consumers are already burdened by economic hardship and poor service delivery.
Oforgi also warned that small businesses, which rely heavily on affordable telecom services for daily operations, would suffer additional financial strain if the hike takes effect.
Following the motion’s adoption, the House directed the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, as well as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to put the tariff adjustment on hold until service quality improves.
The Committee on Telecommunications has been tasked with ensuring compliance.
