Real Reason DSS Took Over Lagos Assembly Complex Revealed

DSS Explains Security Deployment to Lagos Assembly Amid Leadership Crisis

The Department of State Services (DSS) has clarified the reason behind the deployment of its operatives to the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, amid the ongoing leadership tussle.

According to the security agency, its operatives were invited by officials of the Assembly to enhance security at the complex due to perceived threats.

Why DSS Operatives Were Deployed

The Bureau Newspaper earlier reported that heavily armed DSS operatives, alongside the Nigerian police, stormed the Assembly complex and sealed the offices of the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as well as those of the Deputy Speaker and the Clerk of the House.

Reports indicated that the security personnel acted under the directive of the recently removed Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, taking control of the Assembly premises around 10 am at Alausa, Ikeja.

However, in a statement issued on Monday, the DSS explained that it received an official request from the Assembly dated February 14, 2025, seeking increased security due to potential threats.

According to the DSS, credible intelligence suggested that plans were underway to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on February 18, 2025, which could escalate tensions and pose a security risk to the Assembly and its members.

The letter requesting security reinforcement stated:

“The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume office on the 18th of February, 2025, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members. In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, 16th February, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and observing strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice.”

Lawmakers Reaffirm Support for Mojisola Meranda

Meanwhile, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reaffirmed their confidence in Mojisola Meranda as the substantive Speaker.

The lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, dismissing speculations that she might resign amid the ongoing political crisis.

With tensions running high, security agencies remain on high alert to prevent any disruptions at the Assembly complex.
