Abuja, Nigeria – The movement for the creation of Okura State, aimed at carving out a new state from Kogi State, gained momentum on Thursday as the National Chairman of the Movement, Chief Robert Audu, inaugurated the Okura State Movement Special Conveners’ Committee in a ceremony held in Abuja.
The committee, chaired by Professor Emeritus Godwin Ogbadu, was tasked with organizing an expanded meeting of Igala/Bassa stakeholders, which will take place at the Ata Igala Palace in Idah on October 26, 2024. This crucial meeting is expected to finalize preparations ahead of a public hearing on the bill for the proposed state’s creation. The bill, presented by Hon. Halims Abdullahi Ali, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, alongside a memorandum, has already been submitted to the National Assembly.
In his inaugural address, Chief Audu, the Agenyi Attah Igala and a retired federal Permanent Secretary, praised the efforts of Kogi East Senatorial District’s National Assembly members, urging them to push the proposed Okura State to the forefront of discussions in the Assembly. He highlighted that the quest for Okura State dates back to 1980 and emphasized that the movement is motivated by a desire for accelerated development in the region, rather than perceived marginalization.
He explained that various issues, including the state’s name, capital, and composition, had been amicably resolved. After much debate, “Okura State” was adopted due to its historical significance, while Idah, the cultural headquarters of the Igala Kingdom, was chosen as the proposed capital.
Chief Audu clarified that the proposed Okura State would not include Igala communities from other states such as Enugu, Benue, or Anambra due to constitutional complexities. However, it would serve as a home for all Igala, Bassa Kwomo, Bassa Nge, and Mozum people, regardless of their location.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Ogbadu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, pledging to unite the Igala/Bassa people more than ever before. Other notable members of the committee include Vice Chairman AIG Abdulsalam Iyaji (rtd), former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin (rtd), and other prominent figures from the Igala/Bassa communities.
The movement continues to garner support, as stakeholders prepare for the upcoming meeting, which is expected to be a pivotal moment in the quest for Okura State.
