Katsina, Nigeria – Prof. Sani Abubakar Lugga, the 5th Wazirin Katsina, has called on the northern region to unite and prepare for self-determination, much like their southern counterparts. Speaking at a community engagement event organized by the Coalition of Northern Group (CNG) in Katsina, Lugga emphasized the need for northerners to brace for the possibility of separation from Nigeria, citing ongoing secessionist calls from the South.
Lugga expressed concern over the lack of unity in the North when it comes to defending regional rights, contrasting this with the determination shown by groups in the South, particularly the Biafran movement. He urged northern states to learn from the South’s proactive measures, especially in addressing security issues. While southern states have created regional security outfits like Amotekun, Lugga noted, the North remains relatively passive despite facing more severe security challenges.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, Lugga revisited the apprehensions of early northern leaders about the amalgamation of the North and South in 1914, warning that this union remains fragile. He cautioned that without adequate preparation, the North could face significant challenges in the event of a southern secession.
CNG’s National Coordinator, Jamilu Charanchi, echoed Lugga’s sentiments, calling for urgent, community-driven solutions to address Nigeria’s socioeconomic and security problems. Charanchi criticized the country’s leadership for focusing more on elections than the nation’s long-term future and urged communities to take control of their own destinies through collective action.
