Police Arrest Civil Defence NSCDC Officer After Both Operatives Publicly Exchanged Blows In Osun

The Osun State Police Command on Friday said that one of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives captured in a video engaging in a fight with police officers has been arrested

Police officers and operatives of the NSCDC had been captured in a video engaging in a fight.

The Bureau Newspaper gathered that the incident occurred during the week at Elizabeth Estate, Abere in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.

It was learnt that some policemen on Tuesday stormed the area to arrest a resident but were allegedly stopped by NSCDC operatives.

However, the officers returned on Thursday to attack the civil defence corps members.

In the video, the security operatives were seen exchanging blows and slapping each other.

“Some policemen on Tuesday wanted to arrest someone in the estate without a warrant of arrest but were stopped by the civil defence officers, so they (policemen) came back on Thursday, this time with more men to overpower the civil defence guys,” a resident who witnessed the fight said.

“They injured the guy being slapped by a policeman in mufti very well and later dragged him to police CID in Osogbo and sadly till now, their commandant (NSCDC) hasn’t done or said anything since.”

However, Yemisi Opalola, police spokesperson in Osun State in a statement on on Friday disclosed that the policemen came from Oyo State on investigation activities to an Estate in Osogbo to arrest a suspected criminal.

She added that the civil defence personnel guarding the place prevented them from arresting the criminal and in the process; beat up and injured two police officers and deflated the tyres of their vehicle.

“The Osun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public and set the record straight that: Policemen came from Oyo State on investigation activities to an Estate in Osogbo to arrest a suspected criminal, they met Civil defence personnel guarding the place who prevented them from arresting the criminal and in the process; beat-up and injured two police officers and deflated the tires of their vehicle.

“The Policemen thereafter called for reinforcement from the nearest Division around the place. Upon arrival of the reinforcement, the Policemen were rescued and one of the Civil Defence personnel who assaulted the Police officers and prevented them from performing their lawful duty was arrested and taken to State CID for investigation.”

“Investigation is continuing, please,” she added.
