Oyo Explosion: We Couldn’t Arrest Culprits Because Their Country Pulled Out of ECOWAS – Gov. Makinde

by Ohepo Ohepo

In a decisive action to curb illegal mining activities, Oyo State authorities have apprehended individuals involved in the unauthorized processing of minerals at a facility in Idi-Ayunre. This operation is part of the state’s broader efforts to prevent incidents similar to the recent Bodija Incident, which had raised concerns over illegal mining and its ramifications on community safety and environmental health.

Following credible intelligence, the state’s law enforcement teams were dispatched to the facility, resulting in the arrest of the perpetrators currently under custody. The state government has temporarily assumed control of the premises, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations and the subsequent legal proceedings.

The successful operation highlights the critical role of community vigilance and cooperation with the government in tackling illegal activities that pose threats to public safety and the environment. The state’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to enforcing the law and safeguarding the interests of its citizens.

Efforts are also underway to extradite individuals from Mali implicated in the Bodija Incident, who have since fled. The withdrawal of Mali from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) presents challenges to extradition efforts, but the state government remains determined to use diplomatic channels to ensure that justice is served.

Governor Seyi Makinde urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through the toll-free security hotline, 615. He emphasized that the government is dedicated to taking swift action against illegal operations that jeopardize the state’s security and environmental integrity.

This initiative is part of Oyo State’s broader commitment to maintaining law and order, promoting sustainable development, and protecting its natural resources from exploitation. The government calls on all citizens to support these efforts by staying alert and actively participating in safeguarding their community’s welfare.
