Makurdi, Benue State – There was widespread anger and frustration among residents of Benue State on Saturday as petrol prices skyrocketed to between N980 and N1,100 per litre at most filling stations. This sudden price hike has exacerbated the already dire situation, with many residents lamenting the unbearable cost of living.
Before this recent adjustment, independent marketers were selling petrol between N850 and N950 per litre, while black marketers were selling at N1,000 per litre. The NNPC Mega station, which typically sells at N617 per litre, often lacks sufficient supplies to meet public demand.
Christopher, a commercial motorcycle operator, expressed his deep frustration, explaining how the continuous rise in fuel prices is pushing him and his family into deeper poverty. “We did not see this coming,” he said. “This government wants to impoverish Nigerians even more. Every money we make goes to the purchase of fuel. This is not fair to poor Nigerians.”
Similar sentiments were echoed by Comrade Odeka, a commercial bus driver, who criticized the government’s handling of the economy. “We are tired of this government,” he said. “They are insensitive to the pains Nigerians are facing. This government is not fair to Nigerians.”
The soaring fuel prices have had a ripple effect on the cost of living, making it increasingly difficult for residents to afford basic necessities, including food, healthcare, and education. As the situation continues to worsen, the people of Benue State are left questioning the promises made to them during the last election and feeling betrayed by the current administration.
