Abuja, Nigeria – June 12, 2024: Organized Labour has firmly rejected President Bola Tinubu’s assertions that an agreement on a new national minimum wage has been reached. In his nationwide broadcast marking Democracy Day, President Tinubu indicated that a consensus had been achieved. However, Labour representatives contend that this is not accurate.
According to the Acting President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Prince Adewale Adeyanju, no final agreement was reached by the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage as of the conclusion of negotiations on Friday, June 7. Instead, two distinct figures were proposed: N250,000 by Organized Labour and N62,000 by the government and the Organized Private Sector (OPS). These figures were supposed to be presented to the President for consideration.
In a statement, Prince Adeyanju emphasized that any contrary information is considered “doctored” and unacceptable to Labour. He reaffirmed that the only figures discussed were the ones mentioned and insisted that any deviation from these numbers would not be recognized by the Labour organizations.
The NLC has made it clear that they stand by the figures proposed during negotiations and expect the Tripartite Committee’s recommendations to be accurately reflected in any future discussions or announcements regarding the national minimum wage.
