Ododo Bans Public Gatherings, Convoys in Kogi Ahead of Senator Natasha’s Homecoming

Kogi State Bans Convoy Movements, Public Gatherings Over Security Concerns

The Kogi State Government has imposed a ban on all convoy movements and public gatherings, citing security concerns. The announcement was made on Monday in a press statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

The government stated that the decision was based on intelligence reports suggesting that some individuals were planning to use political and religious agitations as a cover to incite violence and disrupt public peace.

Government’s Security Measures

To prevent such incidents, the government has introduced the following measures:

  • Total ban on all rallies and public gatherings until further notice.

  • Regulation of security convoys entering the state, requiring prior clearance from relevant security agencies.

  • Suspension of fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area following a violent crisis that claimed two lives.

  • Deployment of security operatives to affected areas to restore peace and maintain law and order.

The statement urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies, assuring that these measures are temporary and necessary for public safety.

“Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or movements to the appropriate security authorities. Together, we can continue to build a safer and more secure Kogi State,” the statement added.

Allegations of Political Motives

However, sources have suggested that the real motive behind the ban is to prevent Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s homecoming celebration. The restriction on convoys and gatherings is seen as a move to suppress opposition and prevent her supporters from assembling.

This development has drawn criticism, with many accusing Governor Usman Ododo of using state power to stifle political opposition. The governor has also faced allegations of shielding his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from prosecution over alleged financial crimes.

Despite the restrictions, Senator Akpoti’s supporters have vowed to find alternative ways to celebrate her return, signaling potential tensions in the state.
