Lagos Assembly Crisis: Speaker Obasa Insists on Lawsuit Despite Tinubu’s Intervention
The leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly remains unresolved as Speaker Mudashiru Obasa continues his legal battle against former Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers, despite the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, SaharaReporters has learned.
Confusion Among APC Leaders
A source within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos expressed frustration over Obasa’s refusal to withdraw the case, stating:
“After Tinubu’s intervention in Abuja, we thought the crisis was settled. But Obasa’s insistence on continuing with the lawsuit has left many party leaders confused.”
The crisis initially began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was ousted, leading to Meranda’s emergence as the first female Speaker of the House. However, after 49 days, Tinubu’s intervention led to Obasa’s reinstatement, which was expected to bring peace to the House.
Obasa’s Legal Team Stands Firm
Despite APC leaders’ expectations, Obasa’s legal counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), dismissed reports of a possible withdrawal, stating:
“We are awaiting the court’s judgment. The case has been concluded, and Obasa is not withdrawing.”
APC Leaders Expect Case to be Dropped
Former Lagos APC chairman and GAC member Otunba Henry Ajomale insisted the lawsuit would soon be withdrawn:
“Since Mr. President intervened, he will not allow this to escalate further. Everything is back to normal, and at the next sitting, you will see the difference.”
Legislative Standstill Raises Concerns
Despite Obasa’s reinstatement, the House of Assembly has remained inactive since March 3, raising fears of a governance impasse in Lagos.
While party leaders remain hopeful for a resolution, Obasa’s legal stance suggests the crisis is far from over.
