The Nigerian security forces have achieved a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts against banditry and terrorism with the elimination of a notorious bandit leader, Dogo Gide. Gide, who was responsible for numerous violent crimes including the audacious shooting of a military helicopter, succumbed to gunshot injuries following a confrontation with Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) forces. This operation took place in the challenging terrain of Madada forest, located within Maru local government area, on March 12, 2024.
Despite sustaining serious injuries during the clash, Dogo Gide managed to be covertly transported to a hospital in Mabera, Sokoto State, where he eventually died. His death and subsequent burial in Dandalla Village on March 24 marks the end of a long-standing threat posed by his criminal activities, which have plagued the region for years.
Gide’s association with ANSARU and other significant terrorist organizations had made him a key target for Nigerian security forces. His involvement in high-profile crimes, such as the shooting down of a military helicopter in the Dansadau-Birmin Gwari region and the kidnapping of students from Federal Government College Yauri, highlighted the extent of his criminal network and the danger he posed to national security.
The successful operation against Dogo Gide underscores the effectiveness of the collaborative efforts between the 1 Division and 8 Division of the Nigerian Army. It also raises concerns about potential cooperation within the security forces, as indicated by the arrest of a security official who allegedly facilitated Gide’s appearance at the hospital.
