Detained author and activist, Dele Farotimi, has refuted claims that he authorized former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to apologize to Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola in an ongoing defamation case. Farotimi’s attorney, Tope Temokun, clarified the situation during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande.
Farotimi has been held in custody since early December over allegations stemming from his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which accuses Afe Babalola of judicial corruption.
Attorney Clarifies Farotimi’s Position
Temokun, who visited Farotimi at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre, addressed public speculation following Peter Obi’s recent visits to both Farotimi and Babalola. He explained that his client categorically denied instructing Obi to mediate or apologize on his behalf.
In a detailed statement, Temokun said:
“Mr. Farotimi was very clear. He expressed disappointment in the idea that anyone familiar with his principles and philosophy could believe he would send someone to beg on his behalf. He maintains that justice must be served for all parties involved.”
Farotimi further emphasized his belief in the truthfulness of his book and expressed confidence that he would ultimately prevail in the matter, stating, “People fighting me are fighting the truth. I will have the last laugh.”

The legal battle revolves around allegations in Farotimi’s book, which critiques Nigeria’s criminal justice system and implicates Afe Babalola in corrupt practices. Temokun noted that Farotimi was unaware of Obi’s movements and could not control whom the former presidential candidate chose to visit. He reiterated Farotimi’s stance:
“Justice must be served for everyone—Mr. Farotimi, Aare Afe Babalola, and society at large.”

Despite his detention, Farotimi remains steadfast in his position, asserting that his writings contain no falsehoods. He has encouraged his legal team and supporters to continue advocating for justice, expressing optimism about the outcome of the case.
