ABUJA, NIGERIA – Dr. Ugochukwu Williams, the youngest presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections, has announced his departure from the party.
Dr. Williams, who joined the race for the PDP ticket at the age of 38, disclosed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Chokoneze/Akpodim/Ife Ward of the PDP in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, Imo State. He cited inconsistencies in the party’s recent affairs and a departure from its founding principle of “Power to the People” as key reasons for his resignation.
In his letter, Dr. Williams criticized the PDP for failing to uphold democratic processes and repeatedly ignoring its guidelines and constitution. “Certain individuals have become more powerful than the party’s constitution and entire structure,” he noted, adding, “Like the Holy Bible says in Matthew 5:13, the PDP has lost its taste.”
As the youngest presidential aspirant in the PDP’s last primary, Dr. Williams stated that these issues conflict with his political philosophy and expectations, leaving him with a moral obligation to resign.
Despite his resignation, Dr. Williams expressed his appreciation for the close working relationships he had developed within the party. After extensive reflection and consultation with his associates and supporters, he concluded that leaving the PDP is the right step for his political future. However, he has not yet revealed his next move.
