Nigerians to Brace for Higher Telecom Costs as NCC Prepares New Tariff Announcement
Nigerians may face increased charges for calls, SMS, and data services as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to unveil a new tariff structure for telecom operators, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, and others, on December 13, 2024.
This development, announced by NCC Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida in Abuja, aims to simplify tariff plans and address long-standing consumer complaints about data depletion and complex pricing structures.
Simplifying Tariff Plans
Speaking through Reuben Mouka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Maida assured that the December 13 unveiling would hold as scheduled, unlike the previously postponed release date of October 27, 2024.
As part of the changes, the commission has directed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to seven, ensuring:
- Reduced complexity in pricing.
- Transparency and fairness in promotional offerings.
- Consumer protection and better-informed decision-making.
- Healthy competition within the telecom sector.
Addressing Data Depletion Complaints
Acknowledging consumer grievances over rapid data depletion, the NCC revealed that it had conducted extensive investigations and mandated telecom operators to engage independent audit firms.
The NCC highlighted differences in data usage across device types, particularly on Android phones, and emphasized ongoing public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about data consumption patterns.
