Nigeria Expands Contactless Passport Renewal to Europe After Canada Success
The Nigerian government has officially launched the Contactless Passport Application System (CONPAS) across Europe, building on its successful rollout in Canada.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the initiative, highlighting its role in enhancing government efficiency and simplifying passport renewal for Nigerians abroad. He described it as a major step under the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.
With CONPAS, eligible Nigerians in Europe can now renew their passports entirely online, eliminating the need for physical visits to embassies or consulates.
“This initiative reduces travel burdens and long waiting times while bringing Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) operations directly to the digital space,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated.
The government expects the digital system to accelerate processing times while upholding security and transparency.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the European rollout underscores Nigeria’s commitment to modernization and accessibility, ensuring diaspora Nigerians receive efficient government services.
He further affirmed the administration’s drive for digital transformation, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of a $1-trillion economy.
“The Nigerian diaspora plays a vital role in our national development. It is our responsibility to provide them with services that meet global standards of professionalism and efficiency.
“We remain committed to transparency and security in all government operations. This launch is just the beginning, as we work to expand these reforms and bring essential services closer to all Nigerians,” he added.
