NAFDAC Issues Public Alert on Recalled Nivea Black & White Roll-On Deodorant

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding the recall of a specific batch of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, which was flagged by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) over safety concerns.

The recalled item, identified as “Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml marked 48H Protection in African Climate,” is linked to batch number 93529610. According to NAFDAC, the product contains the chemical compound 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde) (BMHCA), which is prohibited in cosmetics due to its potential health risks. The EU RAPEX authorities stated that this chemical is associated with severe health hazards, including harm to the reproductive system, potential impairment to the health of an unborn child, and skin irritation or burns.

“The recalled Nivea product is said to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical prohibited in cosmetics products due to its ability to cause harm to the reproductive system, impairs the health of an unborn child as well as skin irritation and burns to users,” NAFDAC highlighted.

NAFDAC advised importers, distributors, and consumers to be vigilant and avoid the product within the supply chain. “Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the above-mentioned Nivea Roll-on with the affected batch,” the agency warned.

The agency further urged the public in possession of the affected batch to discontinue use and submit any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. “Members of the public in possession of the affected batch of product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement added.

Consumers and healthcare professionals are encouraged to report any adverse reactions associated with the use of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office for prompt action.
