Idah, Kogi State – A devastating gully erosion in Igalogba, Idah Local Government Area, is threatening the lives and properties of residents as it continues to expand annually, particularly during the rainy season. Idah LGA, known as the headquarters of the Igala Kingdom, is witnessing one of its worst environmental disasters in recent memory.
The uncontrolled erosion has already claimed several houses, farmlands, and valuables worth hundreds of millions of Naira. Many residents have been rendered homeless as their homes have been swallowed by the rapidly growing chasm.
Speaking to our correspondent, a distressed resident lamented, “The erosion has destroyed everything we worked hard for. If nothing is done, this community will soon be uninhabitable.”
Calls for Urgent Intervention
Residents are now appealing to the Federal Government’s ecological office and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State for urgent intervention. They are urging the authorities to address the crisis by constructing proper drainage systems and taking other necessary steps to halt the erosion.
Local leaders emphasize the need for prompt action to prevent further destruction, which they fear could escalate during future rainy seasons.
Efforts to contact relevant authorities for comments are ongoing as affected families hope for immediate attention to their plight.
