Address to the Nation

Fellow Malawians,

It is with a heavy heart that I address you today. I have just been informed by the Malawi Defense Force Commander that the search and rescue operation, which I ordered to locate the missing plane carrying our beloved Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others, has concluded.

Discovery and Outcome

The search team found the aircraft in a hill within the Kangawa Forest. Tragically, the plane was completely destroyed on impact, and there were no survivors. All ten passengers, including Vice President Saulos Chilima, perished in this devastating crash.

Reflecting on the Loss

Words cannot adequately convey the depth of our sorrow. This loss is profoundly heartbreaking, not only for the families of those who perished but for our entire nation. Vice President Chilima was a dedicated leader with a vision for Malawi’s future, and his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt.

Context and Future

Vice President Chilima was preparing to challenge me in next year’s General Election following a fallout over an alleged one-term agreement. His untimely death is a significant blow to our nation’s political landscape and to the democratic process we hold dear.

A Message of Unity and Strength

In moments like these, we are reminded of our vulnerability and the unpredictability of life. As we mourn this profound loss, I urge every Malawian to come together in unity and support for the families and loved ones of those we have lost. Let us honor their memory by fostering a spirit of resilience and community.

Concluding Remarks

This is a time for reflection and collective mourning. We must draw strength from one another as we navigate the difficult days ahead. Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to the families affected and in offering prayers for the souls of the departed.

May the souls of Vice President Saulos Chilima and the other victims rest in eternal peace.

Lazarus Chakwera
President of Malawi
