Tensions are rising within the Labour Party (LP) as the party’s National Treasurer, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, has called on the National Chairman, Julius Abure, to disclose detailed accounts of the party’s finances, including over N3.5 billion accumulated from the sales of forms and various fundraising activities for the 2023 elections.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Oparah accused Abure of obstructing her from performing her duties as outlined in the party’s constitution, specifically managing the party’s financial records.
She also claimed that despite repeated attempts to review the party’s financial records following the closure of sales for the expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2023 elections, Abure has consistently refused to cooperate.
In her statement, Oparah expressed, “Good morning, respected members of the press. It is with a profound sense of responsibility towards transparency, accountability, and fairness that I find myself addressing you today. Reluctantly, yet driven by a commitment to these principles, I must shed light on the severe financial mismanagement and ethical breaches that have beset our esteemed party under Mr. Julius Abure’s chairmanship.
“As the National Treasurer, it is with great disappointment that I stand before you, compelled by the failure of our party’s internal governance to hold Mr. Abure accountable for his conspicuous mismanagement of party finances and flagrant disregard for his official responsibilities.
“His quest for control has escalated to the point of sidelining my constitutional responsibilities, starkly outlined in our party’s foundational documents.”
