A 200-level student from the Department of Computer Science at Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano, Abdullahi Juli Mansur, found himself suspended on Tuesday due to what the university administration deemed immoral behavior on campus.
Mansur’s suspension stemmed from a public display of affection toward a female classmate, which the school authorities considered inappropriate conduct.
The incident, captured in a short video clip that circulated widely on social media, depicted Mansur attempting to present a red bouquet to a female student within the university premises. While the recipient did not publicly accept the gesture, the mild spectacle garnered attention from other students, who reacted with cheers.
Within 24 hours of the video’s viral circulation, the private university’s management issued a notice suspending Mansur, referred to as the “lover boy,” for engaging in what they perceived as immoral behavior on campus.
According to an internal memo bearing reference number AUS/REG/54, dated May 14, 2024, the university administration directed the suspension of Mansur, a 200-level Computer Science student, pending further investigation. The memo, signed by Sani A. Usman, a deputy registrar, also announced the formation of a disciplinary committee to probe the incident.
The notice outlined that the suspension was imposed due to Mansur’s display of inappropriate behavior on campus.
A source familiar with the university’s management disclosed that the decision was made to uphold the institution’s guiding principles. It was further revealed that Mansur had previously been cautioned regarding similar behavior, indicating a pattern of misconduct.
“This is not the first time the boy has been found with that character. We have two previous cases, and the university particularly invited the student but he refused to take caution,” the source stated.
The source emphasized that Al-Istiqama University is faith-based, and such conduct is inconsistent with Islamic principles and Hausa culture, thus necessitating the suspension.
