Kano Tension: Machete-Wielding Youths Take to Streets Over Emir Situation (Video)

KANO, NIGERIA – Tension escalated in Kano as rival supporters of the reinstated Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, and his deposed predecessor, Aminu Ado-Bayero, took to the streets armed with dangerous weapons following the latter’s return to the city.

The unrest began after Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was reinstated as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf on Friday, May 24. In a dramatic turn of events, the deposed Emir Aminu Ado-Bayero returned to Kano on Saturday morning, May 25, and made his way to the Gidan Nasarawa palace, as the Gidan Rumfa palace was already occupied by Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.

Governor Abba Yusuf has since ordered the arrest of Ado-Bayero, accusing him of inciting tension and disturbing the peace in the city. The governor’s directive aims to curb the escalating violence and restore order amidst the growing unrest among supporters of the two rival emirs.
