KANO, NIGERIA – The Kano State Police Command has announced that all security agencies in the state will comply with a court order stopping the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano. The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Bompai command headquarters on Saturday by the Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel.
The Police Command, along with other security agencies, pledged to maintain peace in the state amidst the ongoing emirate tussle and vowed to take stringent action against anyone attempting to incite violence.
“The Police Command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 dated 23rd May 2024, issued by the Federal High Court sitting in Kano,” said Commissioner Gumel. “We are working together with the military and other security agencies to ensure adequate security for everyone, as mandated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Commissioner Gumel urged the public to respect the court’s decision, advising them to remain calm and patient while cooperating with security agencies. He also warned against any attempts to exploit the situation to incite violence or launch unprovoked attacks on people, property, or infrastructure in the state. “Any person found engaging in such activities will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law,” he stated.
This enforcement follows an ex-parte order issued by Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano on Thursday, which restrained Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. The order also halted the implementation of a new law that abolished the four emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.
Despite the court order, Governor Yusuf issued a reappointment letter to Sanusi on Friday, criticizing the judge’s decision, which was made from the United States. Emir Sanusi later led Jumat prayers at the Government House before moving to the palace.
The police command remains vigilant and committed to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in Kano. The court is set to address the matter further on June 3, 2024.
