Abuja, Nigeria – April 10, 2025 – Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been honoured with the prestigious Leadership Governor of the Year 2024 award in recognition of his transformative strides in the education sector.
The award was presented during the 17th edition of the Leadership Newspaper Awards, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The event celebrated distinguished Nigerians across various sectors, with notable figures such as Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, named Person of the Year 2024, and the Governor of Jigawa State also receiving accolades.
Governor Yusuf’s recognition comes on the heels of sweeping reforms that have revitalized Kano’s educational system after years of neglect. In a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the award was described as a validation of the governor’s bold commitment to restoring quality education in the state.
Among his most lauded achievements is the allocation of 31% of Kano State’s annual budget to education—exceeding the UNESCO benchmark. His administration has also declared a state of emergency in the sector, rolled out massive school renovations, recruited new teachers, distributed learning materials, and launched an ambitious Education Recovery Plan.
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf expressed heartfelt appreciation to the organizers for the unexpected recognition.
“We never imagined that our efforts would receive such national recognition. We did not pay for this award, we did not lobby for it — we were simply recognized for what we have achieved in Kano,” he stated.
He dedicated the award to the vulnerable children of Kano State and reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to deepening educational reforms and creating opportunities for every child to thrive.
The award further cements Governor Yusuf’s reputation as a proactive leader who prioritizes sustainable development and social impact through strategic policy implementation.
