In July, the Carter Center dismissed widespread rumors of his death after a false letter claiming to announce his passing began circulating on social media. The letter, falsely attributed to the “Office of Jimmy Carter,” stated he had died at home in Plains and included a fabricated biography and commentary on his presidential policies. The Carter Center swiftly debunked the hoax.
President Carter had been receiving hospice care for more than a year, a decision made public by his family in February 2023. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of public service, global advocacy, and an enduring commitment to peace.
