The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Comrade Joel Salifu, on January 6, 2025, visited the Itobe Market to assess the devastating fire outbreak that destroyed properties worth millions of naira. He assured the victims of the state government’s intervention to alleviate their plight.
In a press statement released by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Unubi Emmanuel, Comrade Salifu, who was accompanied by the Member representing Ofu Constituency at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Shehu Seidu Amodu, and the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hon. Muktar Atima, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident.
Recognizing Itobe’s strategic importance as a gateway to Kogi East and the eastern region of Nigeria, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the area, noting that any adverse impact on the community affects the entire Kogi East Senatorial District.
Government’s Commitment to Relief Efforts
Deputy Governor Joel Salifu, in his capacity as Chairman of the State Disaster Response Team, has directed SEMA to conduct a detailed assessment of the incident and submit a report for swift intervention. He assured that once the report is received, government relief efforts will be extended to the affected traders and residents.
Reaffirming Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to the welfare of the people, he urged the victims not to lose faith in the government, assuring them that their suffering will not be ignored.
Call for Safety Measures
The Deputy Governor also advised residents living under high-tension wires to relocate to safer areas to prevent future disasters.
Local Leaders Appeal for Assistance
- Hon. Mohammed Lawal Musa, Chairman of Ofu Local Government Area, revealed that the fire started in the early hours of Monday, February 3rd, and quickly escalated beyond control. He appealed to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for assistance.
- The Ejeh Ofu and Chairman, Ofu Area Traditional Council, HRH Chief Akwu A. Obaje, lamented the extensive damage to traders’ goods, stressing the urgent need for relief materials and financial support.
- SEMA Secretary, Hon. Muktar Atima, disclosed that 37 businesses were completely destroyed, with losses estimated at over ₦150 million. He assured that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the Deputy Governor for immediate action.
Traders Seek Swift Government Intervention
The Chairman of Itobe Market, Mr. Alfa Shuke, expressed gratitude to the Deputy Governor for his prompt response and concern. He urged the state government to expedite relief efforts to help the affected traders restore their businesses and livelihoods.
