Abuja, Nigeria – The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to launch a thorough investigation into the growing menace of ritual killings across Nigeria. The lawmakers also called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to create special court divisions dedicated to handling homicide, femicide, and other related cases.
Rising Cases of Ritual Killings Spark Concern
Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing rise in ritual killings and violent crimes, especially among young people. These heinous acts continue to instill fear among citizens, prompting urgent action from the National Assembly.
During plenary, the House debated a motion sponsored by Dr. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, representing Andoni-Opobo Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State, alongside three other lawmakers. The motion urged law enforcement agencies to prioritize homicide investigations and ensure the diligent prosecution of offenders.
Lawmakers Demand Stronger Action Against Homicide
Several lawmakers expressed deep concern over the trend of indiscriminate killings and the lack of effective prosecution of perpetrators.
- Billy Osawaru, representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency of Edo State, highlighted the increasing dangers faced by women, noting that they have become targets of violent crimes.
- Abdulhakeem Ado, representing Wudil Garko Federal Constituency of Kano State, blamed the failure of diligent prosecution for the persistence of such gruesome acts, stressing the need for tougher legal action against offenders.
House Calls for Bye-Elections to Fill Vacant Seats
In a separate development, the House of Representatives also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies. The lawmakers emphasized the need to ensure proper representation in legislative houses where vacancies exist.
