PDP Accuses Edo Governor of Mismanaging ₦30 Billion, APC Fires Back
BENIN CITY, Nigeria — The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the recently sworn-in Governor Monday Okpebholo and his administration of mismanaging over ₦30 billion allegedly left in the state treasury by the former PDP-led government under Governor Godwin Obaseki. The allegations were made during a press conference on the “State of the Nation,” held by PDP’s caretaker committee chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, in Benin City on Monday.
Dr. Aziegbemi alleged that the funds were squandered within two weeks of Governor Okpebholo’s inauguration, primarily to reward political “godfathers” who supported his election victory in September 2024.
“The Obaseki-led administration left over ₦30 billion in the state coffers, yet salaries for November have not been paid. Instead, the funds have been filtered away and shared with political godfathers who worked to circumvent the will of the people,” Aziegbemi claimed.
Allegations of Financial Impropriety
The PDP also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration of purchasing over ₦5 billion worth of vehicles without adhering to the Edo State Procurement Act and attempting to justify over ₦2 billion in expenses as inauguration costs.
Aziegbemi criticized the government for failing to maintain the salary payment schedule established under the Obaseki administration, which ensured state workers received their salaries on or before the 26th of each month.
“During our eight years in government, salaries were paid on or before the 25th. Today, no worker has received their November 2024 salary,” Aziegbemi noted, further alleging that civil servants are being pressured to accept improperly documented vehicles.
Government Denies Allegations
Responding to the accusations, the Edo State Government, through Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, dismissed the PDP’s claims as baseless and an attempt to discredit Governor Okpebholo’s administration.
“No amount of blackmail will stop this government from exposing the eight years of rot under the PDP. Governor Okpebholo is committed to recovering the commonwealth of Edo people from a few dubious men,” the statement read.
Itua emphasized that the administration, despite being only 14 days old, is already taking steps to accelerate development in the state and meet the expectations of Edo residents.
A Divided Narrative
The PDP’s accusations and the APC-led government’s rebuttal highlight the tense political climate in Edo State following a contentious election. While the PDP questions the financial transparency of the new administration, the APC is positioning itself as a reformist government eager to correct alleged past mismanagement.
As both parties trade allegations, Edo residents will likely monitor closely to see if Governor Okpebholo can deliver on his promises or whether the accusations of financial impropriety will overshadow his early tenure.
