Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to commission a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing free and comprehensive care for individuals living with sickle cell anaemia. The facility, located at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, is a milestone in the state’s healthcare initiatives.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, during the launch of the 2nd Maternal and Neonatal Week 2024 in Kumbotso Local Government Area.
The new center will offer a wide range of free services, including diagnosis, consultations, medications, and surgical procedures specifically tailored for sickle cell patients.
Governor Yusuf’s commitment to addressing the burden of sickle cell anaemia aligns with his healthcare reform blueprint and campaign promises. Earlier this year, he signed a landmark premarital health screening bill into law, prohibiting marriages between individuals with matching genotypes. This proactive legislation aims to reduce the prevalence of sickle cell anaemia in the state.
“This care center is a beacon of hope for individuals and families grappling with sickle cell anaemia. It demonstrates the administration’s resolve to alleviate the challenges of those affected while fostering a healthier Kano,” said Dr. Labaran Yusuf.
The initiative has garnered widespread acclaim for its focus on both prevention and treatment, reinforcing Kano State’s commitment to improving public health and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
