*Abuja, August 30, 2023* – Responding to urgent flood warnings from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Admiral Usman Jibrin, the Accord Party Governorship candidate for the upcoming 2023 off-season election, has called upon the Federal Government, Kogi State Government, and local administrators in at-risk regions to swiftly implement measures that safeguard communities from the looming flood threats.
NIHSA’s recent predictions have spotlighted a heightened risk of flooding across Nigeria, particularly in 178 Local Government Areas (LGAs) spanning 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Engr. Clement Nze, the agency’s Director General/CEO, emphasized the pressing need for proactive steps to mitigate the potential impact of the anticipated floods.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Admiral Usman Jibrin emphasized the importance of preparedness and collaboration among government bodies to alleviate potential suffering caused by the impending floods. His appeal was specifically directed towards the Federal Government, the Kogi State Government, and all 21 Local Government Administrators within the state’s jurisdiction.
Admiral Jibrin not only called on the authorities to establish measures for swift assistance to potential flood victims but also urged them to ensure the availability of relief materials and temporary shelters. He highlighted that proactive planning could significantly reduce the loss of both lives and property.
Furthermore, Admiral Jibrin extended his concerns to Kogi State’s agricultural sector, urging farmers to remain vigilant and ready for potentially aggressive flooding. He advised them to expedite their harvesting processes to minimize possible losses resulting from the anticipated inundations. This proactive stance demonstrates his comprehensive approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by the imminent floods.
As flood risks continue to threaten communities across Nigeria, Admiral Usman Jibrin’s appeal underscores the critical role that collaboration between governmental bodies and local communities plays in safeguarding lives and livelihoods. Through the proactive implementation of measures, provision of essential resources, and support for vulnerable populations, governments can exhibit their commitment to citizens’ welfare, particularly during times of natural crises.
