FG Commences Payment of November Salaries

The Federal Government has commenced the long-awaited payment of November 2024 salaries for civil servants, resolving a delay that had sparked significant concerns. The disruption stemmed from the ongoing migration of payroll systems from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). This transition temporarily hindered Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) from accessing funds for salaries and operational programs.

Concerns Over Salary Delays

The delay had severe implications for civil servants, particularly during a period of rising inflation and economic challenges. Many workers, dependent on their salaries to manage basic living expenses, voiced their frustration. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) was particularly vocal, highlighting the hardships faced by members and calling for urgent intervention.

SSANIP President, Philip Ogunsipe, emphasized, “Timely salary payments are not just essential but critical for the sustenance of our members and their families, especially in today’s economic climate.”

Civil Servants React to Payment

With salaries now being disbursed, the relief among affected workers is palpable. A senior director in the Federal Ministry of Defence confirmed the payments, stating, “The salary came in this morning after quite a number of days. It was a significant relief.” Similarly, a government school teacher acknowledged receiving her payment, noting the importance of financial stability during such critical times.

Key Recommendations

To prevent future disruptions, the Federal Government must streamline the transition between payroll systems and maintain clear communication with civil servants. Prompt salary payments are essential for workers’ morale and productivity, especially during economic uncertainty.
