The Federal Government is expecting a 15% reduction in courier service costs within Nigeria, according to the Postmaster General (PMG) of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi. Speaking during the World Postal Day celebration in Abuja, Odeyemi explained that this cut would be realized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NIPOST and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
Odeyemi stated, “With the implementation of this partnership, MSMEs can anticipate a 15% reduction in courier service costs, improved market access, and enhanced last-mile delivery capabilities, contributing to job creation and economic development across Nigeria.”
Additionally, NIPOST has partnered with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to facilitate the transportation of biological samples within Nigeria. The project, which is in its final stages, will be launched in Taraba and Abia States, using NIPOST’s delivery network to strengthen the National Integrated Sample Referral Network (NiSRN) for biological specimen referrals.
Odeyemi also highlighted the development of the National Addressing System in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPoPC). This system is expected to enhance mail handling, improve location identification, and support efficient service delivery in government agencies, businesses, and financial institutions.
In addition to these initiatives, NIPOST will unveil its agency banking solution, POTMONI, as part of the World Postal Day celebration. This service aims to provide accessible and affordable financial services nationwide, contributing to the advancement of the Nigerian Postal Service.
To mark the day, NIPOST State Offices will organize roadshows and other activities to raise awareness of the role of the post in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
