Federal Govt Initiates Design for New Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway

Sen. Dave Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, announced a significant new infrastructure project following presidential directives— the design of the Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway. This statement came after his inspection of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing national connectivity through major transportation projects.

During his remarks in Lagos, Umahi expressed enthusiasm about the new directive from the President, outlining the scope of the Sokoto-Badagry highway. Spanning approximately 1000 kilometers, this highway will serve as a critical spur of the existing coastal highway project. Umahi confirmed that the design phase has already commenced and the project is awaiting approval from the Federal Executive Council to proceed further.

“The immediate design initiation of the Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway marks a pivotal step in our national infrastructure development,” Umahi stated. “Once approved by the Federal Executive Council, construction will begin at the Sokoto end, which is designated as the zero point.”

Additionally, the Minister mentioned another significant spur extending from Enugu through Abakaliki to Ogoja, and onward to Cameroon, indicating a broader vision for regional connectivity that could enhance economic activities across West Africa.

These developments are part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to improve road infrastructure, facilitating easier movement of goods and people both within the country and across the region. As these projects advance, they are expected to play a crucial role in boosting economic growth and regional integration.
