Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has regained his freedom after spending 56 harrowing days in captivity.
Tsiga was abducted on February 5, 2025, from his hometown in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, alongside nine other residents. His ordeal ended following the payment of a hefty ransom by his family.
While initial reports suggested that N60 million was paid for his release, sources close to the family revealed that the actual ransom was three times that amount. However, despite receiving the ransom, the kidnappers kept him in captivity for an additional week before allowing him to speak with his family.
“The money was taken to them, but they remained silent for a week. It was only on Tuesday, March 11, that they called, and we heard his voice,” a family source disclosed.
The kidnappers later demanded an additional sum, but according to the source, no further payment was made. “Nothing was actually added, and as we speak, they are in Zamfara State, from where they will take the general to Abuja,” he added.
A top military source also confirmed Tsiga’s release, stating that he is in good condition.
His abduction had sparked widespread concern, highlighting the growing insecurity in the North-West region. His release, while a relief to his family and associates, raises further questions about the rising trend of ransom kidnappings in the country.
