Abuja, Nigeria – The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has issued a directive for an immediate crackdown on the improper transport of inflammable substances, including petroleum products, across Nigeria. This move is in response to recent incidents involving fire-related road crashes.

The directive, as communicated by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Friday, calls for the massive deployment of patrol operatives on highways nationwide. These operatives are tasked with conducting thorough searches to identify vehicles transporting these hazardous materials. Drivers found carrying such substances will be required to empty the fuel into their vehicle’s tank on the spot.

Mr. Mohammed emphasized that this measure is crucial for preventing devastating accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users. He also highlighted that drivers could face prosecution for endangering the lives of their passengers by improperly transporting inflammable substances.

In addition to the patrol operations, the FRSC will embark on an awareness campaign to educate drivers and passengers about the dangers of transporting petroleum products in vehicles. This initiative aims to curtail the practice and enhance road safety.

The Corps Marshal also ordered a full-scale investigation into recent fire-related road crashes to determine their causes and prevent future occurrences. The investigation revealed that drivers often carry petroleum products while in transit, leading to fatal incidents when accidents occur.

To further support this effort, Mr. Mohammed instructed CPEOs nationwide to engage in aggressive sensitization of road users. He also urged passengers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to FRSC patrol teams or through emergency lines, ensuring the safety of all commuters.
