ABUJA, NIGERIA – In an eyepopping courtroom revelation, contractor Olugbenga Obadina has admitted that his company, Almond Projects Limited, received a total of N2.17 billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration without any formal contract. The admission came during Obadina’s cross-examination in a fraud trial brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC is prosecuting Obadina and Almond Projects Limited on multiple charges, including conspiracy, official corruption, and money laundering. The contested payments were made on November 28, 2015, under the authority of then-National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.).
Under questioning, Obadina revealed that there were no specific projects or locations mentioned in the payment details. He clarified that none of the funds were allocated for the installation of solar or power plants in Yobe State, as previously suggested.
Following Obadina’s disclosure, the EFCC has initiated steps to detain Major General Monguno, identifying him as a critical figure in the ongoing investigation. The court has scheduled the trial to resume on May 30 and 31, 2024, for further proceedings.
In addition, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is reportedly reviewing related cases, indicating a broader scope of investigation involving Monguno.
