Dr. Bitrus Pogu: Middle Belt Rejects Arewa Republic, Advocates for Restructuring and Dialogue

Abuja – Dr. Bitrus Pogu, President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), has firmly stated that the Middle Belt will not be part of any proposed Arewa Republic, should such a movement materialize. In an interview with VINCENT KALU, Dr. Pogu, a member of the Patriots group, emphasized that the Middle Belt remains committed to Nigeria and rejects the notion of breaking away.

Dr. Pogu criticized recent separatist movements, including the declaration of an Arewa Republic by a northern group. He denounced the move as treasonous and labeled it as a display of irresponsible leadership. “We have funny characters up here in the north,” Pogu said, referencing the past administration’s economic struggles and the muted responses from northern leaders.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to engage in dialogue with leaders from the recent #EndBadGovernance protest, highlighting the need for addressing systemic issues rather than entertaining secessionist threats. “It means that anytime things don’t work their way, they want Nigeria to break up,” Pogu remarked, expressing frustration with the repeated threats of secession.

Dr. Pogu emphasized that the Middle Belt is determined to build a better Nigeria and will not participate in any movements aimed at fragmenting the country. He asserted that the region is committed to Nigeria’s unity and development through meaningful reforms and inclusive governance.

The conversation also touched on the broader implications of separatist agitations. Dr. Pogu suggested that such movements are often driven by dissatisfaction with current governance and economic policies. He pointed out that the Fulani, a dominant group in the north, have exacerbated regional tensions, leading to increased calls for separation.

On the issue of restructuring, Dr. Pogu reiterated the need for a new, democratic constitution to address Nigeria’s diversity and ensure equitable representation. He expressed optimism that such reforms would mitigate the need for secessionist agitations and foster a more unified nation.

During a recent visit to President Tinubu, the Patriots group, of which Dr. Pogu is a member, urged the president to prioritize the drafting of a people’s democratic constitution. Dr. Pogu expressed hope that this would address Nigeria’s complex socio-political issues and promote national cohesion.

Addressing comments by Professor Ango Abdullahi of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), who suggested revisiting the 1914 Amalgamation Treaty, Dr. Pogu dismissed the idea as regressive. He highlighted the historical struggle to maintain Nigeria’s unity, noting that such calls for secession undermine the progress made in overcoming past divisions.

Dr. Pogu’s statements reflect a broader call for unity and reform, aiming to address the underlying issues contributing to separatist sentiments and to advance Nigeria’s development through inclusive and progressive governance.
