The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Zone C, headquartered in Port Harcourt, joined the global customs community to mark the 2025 International Customs Day. The event was highlighted in a press release shared with journalists on Monday.
Speaking during the celebration, the Zonal Coordinator, Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) of Customs, SK Dangaladima, reflected on the year’s theme: “Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity.” He emphasized the crucial role customs administrations play globally, noting the leadership example set by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, psc(+).
“Customs is no longer just about managing borders but about creating seamless pathways for trade, fostering security, and driving economic growth for all,” Dangaladima stated.
Efficiency: Empowering Trade Through Innovation
The ACG highlighted the increasing globalization of supply chains and the rising expectations for speed and precision in trade. He stressed that the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics has enhanced efficiency in customs operations, reduced bottlenecks, and improved transparency.
“Efficiency isn’t just about speed—it’s about building systems that are equitable and inclusive, ensuring small businesses and entrepreneurs can access the global marketplace,” he added.
Security: Safeguarding Borders in a Complex World
While efficiency is key, Dangaladima stressed that security remains a top priority. In 2025, the Zone is committed to proactive security measures, including advanced risk management systems to identify threats before they materialize. He also underscored the importance of international collaboration, such as information sharing and joint operations, to strengthen border security while maintaining the integrity of supply chains.
“Security is no longer a solitary endeavor; it is a shared responsibility that demands trust, innovation, and vigilance,” he said, noting customs’ vital role in combating threats like smuggling, cybercrime, and terrorism.
Prosperity: Driving Economic Growth and Sustainability
On the theme of prosperity, Dangaladima described customs as a cornerstone of economic development, fostering investment, innovation, and job creation. However, he emphasized the need for sustainability in customs practices, advocating for green trade initiatives and environmental stewardship.
“True prosperity is inclusive,” he remarked. “Customs must act as a bridge between nations, fostering equitable trade relationships that allow developing economies to thrive alongside established ones.”
A Call for Collaboration
The ACG emphasized that delivering on the commitments of efficiency, security, and prosperity requires collaboration among governments, international organizations, private sector partners, and civil society.
“Together, we can build a customs community that is agile, inclusive, and resilient—one that serves as a model for how global systems can function effectively,” he said.
Concluding his address, Dangaladima reiterated the service’s dedication to its mission. “Every container cleared, every border secured, and every trade relationship facilitated brings us closer to a world where customs serves as a force for good, delivering tangible benefits to economies and societies alike.”
He encouraged officers and stakeholders to uphold their commitment to fostering a future where customs operations unite nations and promote shared prosperity.
