Katsina, Nigeria – Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he now relies on rental income from one of his two houses in Kaduna State to sustain himself, maintaining that he did not corruptly enrich himself during his eight-year tenure as Nigeria’s leader.
Buhari made the revelation on Thursday while addressing the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in Katsina State at the Government House in Katsina. The meeting was held ahead of the state’s local council elections scheduled for February 15.
“Nigeria is a Difficult Country to Govern”
The former president emphasized the complexities of governing Nigeria, stating that most citizens are unaware of the administrative challenges leaders face.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. Until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country, you will not understand the complexities,” Buhari said in Hausa.
He also noted that he feels healthier and looks better now than he did during his presidency, a sentiment he said has been acknowledged by many who have seen him recently.
Buhari Denies Illicit Enrichment
Buhari firmly denied allegations of corruption during his time in office, stating that no one could blackmail him for illicit enrichment. He revealed that he owns only three houses: one in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, and two in Kaduna State.
“After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting, where I get money for feeding,” he said.
The former president urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability while in office, emphasizing the importance of ethical governance.
Governor Radda Calls for APC Mobilization
In his remarks, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda urged APC stakeholders to mobilize support across the state ahead of the upcoming local government elections. He stressed the need for a transparent electoral process that reflects the will of the people.
“We are committed to conducting elections that reflect the true will of the people,” Radda said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed. He called on party chieftains to canvass for votes in their respective local government areas to ensure a total victory for the APC.
