BREAKING: Sowore Sues GT Bank For Freezing His Accounts Since 2019

Human rights and freedom of expression form the bedrock of democratic societies, and the case of Omoyele Sowore serves as a profound illustration of these principles under threat. Sowore, renowned as a human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, has recently filed a lawsuit against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), seeking ₦100 million in damages. This legal action stems from the bank’s decision to freeze his accounts in 2019—a move that Sowore contends constitutes a violation of his fundamental rights to property and access to financial resources.

According to Sowore’s counsel, Inibehe Effiong, the freezing of the accounts was executed without valid justification or prior notification, thereby infringing upon Sowore’s constitutional rights as outlined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. He argues that this arbitrary action has resulted in significant financial hardships and emotional distress for Sowore, undermining his capacity to meet day-to-day expenses and manage business obligations. The financial limitations posed by the account restrictions have led Sowore to navigate a landscape of debt and embarrassment, highlighting the stark implications of financial repression on personal and professional life.

Sowore asserts that despite formal requests to lift the restrictions, GTB has refused to comply, which exacerbates the situation and raises questions regarding due process in financial institutions. His lawsuit calls for not only the immediate unfreezing of his accounts but also a recognition of the damages sustained due to the bank’s actions. This case serves as a critical test of the legal frameworks that uphold individual rights against the backdrop of institutional authority.

In essence, Sowore’s pursuit of justice is not merely a personal battle; it resonates broadly within the discourse of human rights and democracy in Nigeria. The outcome of this case could set a pivotal precedent regarding the safeguarding of financial freedom and accountability of banking institutions towards their clients. Thus, the legal proceedings into Sowore’s claims will be closely monitored with implications that extend into the realms of justice, human rights, and democratic integrity.
