Renowned nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. He died peacefully on Friday morning, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
The family described him as a man deeply committed to truth, equity, and justice, noting that his lifelong dedication to a free, independent, and progressive Nigeria remained unwavering until his final moments.
Adebanjo was a distinguished lawyer, former organizing secretary of the Action Group, and a prominent leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization. His legacy as a champion of democracy and social justice has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family announced that consultations are ongoing with his friends, associates, and various groups both within and outside Nigeria to organize a befitting funeral. Further details regarding the funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.
The statement was jointly signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo on behalf of the family.
