In a major development ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 polls, are reportedly in advanced discussions to adopt a new political platform.
Sources close to the matter revealed that the two leaders recently met to explore options for a potential alliance. The discussions, described as strategic, are aimed at consolidating opposition forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
Further talks are scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 30, in Yola, Adamawa State, during a ceremony marking Atiku’s 78th birthday, where Obi is expected to deliver a keynote speech. The event, being held at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), underscores the strengthening ties between the two political heavyweights.
A spokesperson confirmed that while a merger is on the table, the exact details of the political arrangement are still under wraps.
This move comes amid internal crises within both the PDP and Labour Party. Atiku’s PDP continues to grapple with a prolonged leadership crisis, with current Chairman Umar Damagum being a loyalist of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, who openly opposed Atiku during the 2023 elections. Meanwhile, Obi’s Labour Party is facing its own internal divisions, with strained relations between the former Anambra governor and LP Chairman Julius Abure.
The discussions are said to involve prominent political figures, including former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, signaling a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 election season approaches.
