Abuja, Nigeria – Augustine Eguavoen, the interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has denied reports claiming he stepped down from his position following a draw against Rwanda. These rumors circulated shortly after the match, with some sources quoting Eguavoen as stating that his tenure was only meant for two matches.
The former Nigerian international was appointed as interim coach after Bruno Labbadia turned down an offer from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Eguavoen led the team to an impressive 3-0 victory against Benin Republic in Uyo before the draw against Rwanda.
Reports had suggested that Eguavoen announced his resignation, explaining that his two-match mandate had been completed and expressing satisfaction with the team’s discipline and performance. However, upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Eguavoen clarified the situation.
He explained that his earlier comments had been misinterpreted and emphasized that he remains in charge of the Super Eagles, stating, “I’m still very much in charge. I’m the Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment.”
Eguavoen also mentioned that he would sit down with the NFF hierarchy to discuss plans for future games, including a possible fixture against Libya. Despite the confusion, the coach affirmed his commitment to the team’s progress and their bright future.
