Asari Dokubo Pledges Alliance with Northern Leaders for 2027, Accuses President Tinubu of Betrayal
Former militant leader Asari Dokubo has announced plans to form a political alliance with Northern leaders ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing betrayal by President Bola Tinubu. In a recent viral video, Dokubo accused Tinubu of abandoning him despite his extensive support in the 2023 election campaign. Dokubo recounted his financial and personal sacrifices to canvass votes for Tinubu, claiming he emptied his bank account in support of Tinubu’s candidacy.
In a direct address to his followers, Dokubo expressed regret over his previous stance, stating, “I apologize to our elders; they were right to form alliances with the North, and we as the younger generation will revive that alliance.” He further claimed that the Ijaw people can no longer trust the Yoruba, saying, “The Tinubu I know now isn’t the Tinubu I used to know. Only the Northerners can work with the Ijaw people.”
Dokubo’s statement comes amid ongoing political realignments, with reports suggesting the formation of a new opposition coalition aimed at challenging Tinubu in 2027. In January, political scientist Pat Utomi disclosed consultations with PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso on creating a unified opposition front. Utomi recently confirmed that the trio has agreed to collaborate on a political platform intended to unseat Tinubu’s administration.
