Nigerian Army Probes Viral Video of Major General Assaulting Couple in Abuja

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into a viral video showing Major General G.S. Mohammed and his aide, Corporal A. Abubakar, allegedly assaulting a couple, Mr. Vershima Mker and Ms. Lami Jennifer Iorvihi, following a road altercation in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred after Mr. Mker overtook Major General Mohammed’s vehicle in the Federal Capital Territory. The video, obtained by SaharaReporters, captures the senior officer and his aide physically attacking the couple.

Allegations by the Victims

According to the couple, the assault escalated after they were stopped, dragged out of their vehicle, and subjected to severe physical abuse. Following the attack, they claim the General and his aide handcuffed them, forced them into the trunk of a car, and transported them to Gwarimpa Police Station.

The couple further alleged that the General instructed police officers to detain them indefinitely until he authorized their release.

Army’s Response

Reacting to the incident, Nigerian Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed that the Chief of Army Staff has ordered an investigation into the matter.

“The Chief of Army Staff has directed an investigation into the viral video. However, we have yet to ascertain the veracity of the footage as we are not privy to the circumstances that led to the altercation,” Nwachukwu stated.

He added that the Army would seek the Major General’s account of events to better understand the situation, emphasizing the need to thoroughly investigate the claims before drawing conclusions.
